Q: Why "Cage9"? Evan: It means "No Cage" in Swahili. Okay, in German...sort of. We were invited by an independent label to spend a month in Germany and decided that we would no longer be in a Cage...musically speaking. "Nein" (pronounced "nine") means "no" in German but the number nine worked out fine. No boundaries, no holds barred, no cage. Q: Why happened between 2001's "Human Feedback and 2003's "Onyx Inch e.p."? Evan: We decided to move to L.A.from Panama in 2001 - it happened in 2002...a traumatic experience to say the least. (laughs) We'd written and recorded around 30 songs and leaked thousands of demo CDs & MP3s since then but somehow we never officially released any of it. We're probably gonna' post-release what we'd always referred to as the "Fearful Orbits" L.P. with stuff like "Incomunicado," "Ocean," "Devices" and "Fear & Sex." Ask for it soon on Cdbaby.com. Q: What's the story behind "the Onyx Inch"? Gustavo: Our publishing company wanted us to wait to put out a full-length so the e.p. is our small, dark step forward...i guess...okay, really it was the password on an aol promo CD that arrived at our mailbox. Q: The other night, Gustavo was wearing the same shirt that Evan wore the night before...what's up with that? Evan: We're a struggling L.A. band...we live in the same apartment...we play musical shirts. There's no evergreen for new, CLEAN clothes...you make do with whacha' got - or what Gustavo's got. Q: What's up with the Octopus logo? Evan: I AM the Octopus! ...but with 9 arms instead of 8... this is an actual BAND and everyone contributes to the audio-momentum that takes place as end result...I just happened to design that logo... It's the Cage9-opus. Also, my dad was a Marine Biologist and growing up in Panama, I'd help him collect them at low tide out on the reefs to go study in the lab. You'd spray this highly sedating liquid down into the holes and out they'd come - 3 sheets to the wind I guess you could say.. good stuff! Q: Influences? Evan: I'm currently spinning most of the Lollapalooza line-up! Dredg, Catherine Wheel, Deftones, A Perfect Circle, Smashing Pumpkins, Manu Chao, Depeche Mode, Queens of the Stone Age, Kid A-Radiohead, PJ Harvey and Miles Davis. I think what kickstarted my rawk-finger in Junior High was AC/DC, Gn'R, Metallica and Led Zeppelin...and then came Jane's Addiction. Gustavo: Would have to say a lot of Primus, Tool, Perfect Circle, Dream Theater, Rush, Chili Peppers and lately Dredg and lots of local (LA) bands...Pipo's older brother exposed me to Rush and that's what made me start playing bass.. I also listen to some salsa and wawanko to keep my latin flavor present. Pipo: Rush, Dream Theater, some good "plena" (reggae from Panama)...I'm really enjoying our friends Allrise's CD. Q: You're all from Panama - where's the accent? Evan:
I grew up in both Panama AND the Panama Canal
Zone…gringo-landia. Haha. I went to American schools and grew up
listening to good old American heavy metal but I'm "panameno" too so
we've got a couple Spanish tracks including "Nacionabismo" that was
on "The Sheild." We'll probably do some more rock en espanol
someday... Q: What is "Remember December" about? Evan: It's kind of a Y2K thing. In 2000 "the Zone" and the canal was turned over to Panama. I stayed cuz Panama is home but most of my friends and family jumped ship "women and children first." Kind of a bummer. Q: Panama City, Florida? Answer: Uuuuuh, no. A little further south. Look: between Columbia and Costa Rica. Think: Noriega and bad movies with Pierce Brosnan. See: Cheap booze, lotsa' humidity, beaches, salsa, reggae and Cage9! Q: What are your plans for 2004? Ev: Tour, write, promote, write, tour, promote and slip through every crack in the door that we can find. We've got alot of radio and fan action going on for us in Latin America too so not only do we hope to be all over the states (in a dive bar near YOU), but we also hope to take the good rawk way south as well.
